Abstract
In this compelling business case, we follow the journey of Héctor Alarcón, a 33-year-old engineer facing a pivotal career decision in the arid landscape of northern Chile. After a challenging first year as the Acting Maintenance Superintendent at the Perdices division, Héctor must choose between assuming the role permanently or returning to his previous position as Chief Engineer for a better quality of life for himself and his family. This narrative unfolds against the backdrop of significant organizational changes within Codelco, the world’s largest copper producer. The decision to internalize mining operations at the Perdices division led to a series of tumultuous events, including a revolving door of mine managers and challenges in integrating new and existing employees. Héctor finds himself thrust into a position of leadership, grappling with the complexities of team management and the need for strategic decision- making in a rapidly changing environment. The case highlights Héctor’s personal and professional struggles, including his desire for work-life balance and his evolving leadership style. It raises critical questions about leadership development, autonomy, and the role of formal education, such as pursuing an MBA, in addressing professional challenges. As we delve into Héctor’s journey, we explore the themes of leadership, organizational change, personal growth, and the delicate balance between career aspirations and family commitments. The case leaves us pondering Héctor’s future, as he contemplates the path forward in the midst of uncertainty and personal effort.
