Abstract

This article reviews the concept of multibusiness firm for the purpose of establishing its specificity and conceptual distinction from other commonly used meanings, such as large, diversified firms, business group, economic group, among others. Initially, we present the main terms used, starting with the concept of Modern Business Enterprise (NME) discussed by Chandler (1977), which can be considered equivalent to the concept of multibusiness firm. Also reviewed other meanings commonly used and which also refer to the idea of multi unit companies. Then, we deduce the characteristics of the multibusiness firm, and contrast all the concepts presented, and discussed the major challenges for the internal management of these organizations, especially in relation to its structure and development and capture synergies. We conclude with the presentation of those key considerations that define the specificity of multi-business firms.
