Gender Inequality in the Chilean University System
Main Article Content
Abstract
In this paper, the distribution by gender in 62 Chilean universities has been analyzed, considering the student body and its academic staff, during the period 2009-2019. Gender inequality indicators have been estimated to analyze the situation of Chilean universities. The main results show that there is a high correlation between the masculinity of student enrollment and the masculinity of the academic staff, and despite the fact that at the aggregate level the university system has moved towards the feminization of student enrollment and equity in the teaching staff, problems of gender segregation persist. It is concluded that the inclusion of women in Chilean universities is still a pending issue and efforts should be decisively promoted to reduce the gender gap that exists in some Chilean universities, encouraging the revision of their student application policies and in their teacher recruitment and selection policies with a gender perspective.
