Abstract
The objective of the research is to understand the effect of empowerment on organizational commitment. The uni- verse were small and medium enterprises, with a total of 219 workers.
The instrument used to measure psychological empowerment is Spreitzer ́s (1995), with four dimensions (mean- ing, competence, self-determination and impact) and to measure organizational commitment the instrument by Meyer & Allen (1991) with three dimensions (affective, normative, cost / alternative). The reliability of the scales is variable and in each case adequate, the results are between 0.69 and 0.87.
The results show a high empowering in small business while in the mid-size businesses it is lower. Regarding organizational commitment, it appears similar. The regression model of the median size company indicates that the commitment is explained by the impact, self-determination and meaning. In small businesses a predictor model for commitment based on empowerment vari- ables is not observed.
