Abstract

Absenteeism is a variable of great interest to both managers and academics due to the organisational and economic costs it represents. Therefore, there have been numerous studies on variables that explain the motivation of workers to be absent. This paper aims to analyse the influence of the components of organisational commitment in voluntary absenteeism from a sample of 355 Mexican workers. The results of the structural equation model show evidence of a significant negative effect on affective commitment in the intention of absenteeism, as well as a positive and signifi- cant effect on normative commitment. Continuing commitment, however, was not shown to be affected significantly. The main conclusion is the importance for organisations to promote affective commitment instead of normative com- mitment, as a mitigating mechanism against volunteer absenteeism.
